Syracuse students talk about the effect of heavy snow on travel
VIDEO TRANSCRIPT: Students struggle with travel amidst lake effect snow

Noah Schuler: It may look like a winter wonderland here in Syracuse – but not for everyone. Javier Berczely is a senior at Syracuse University who lives off campus.

Berczely: I walk around 15 minutes every morning to get to class and 15 minutes every night to get back home.

Schuler: When the winter months bring lake effect snow, many seniors here at Syracuse University, especially those who live off-campus, oftentimes feel stranded.

Berczely: But I’ve had a few days earlier this week in which I was either slipping or just had to walk very slowly to get to class in one piece.

Schuler: The university has cancelled classes due to snow just 5 times in its 150 year history. Berczely and other students continue to voice concerns about the lack of travel for off campus students.

Berczely: There’s way too many mornings in which the sidewalks are not shoveled and that’s kind of dangerous for students who are trying to get to class on time.

Schuler: The snow – which covered my car mere minutes after parking – has off-campus student James Porter-Delgardo asking for answers.

Porter-Delgardo: Well Syracuse has a bunch of off-campus students and I think it would go a long way if Syracuse was able to do something to just clear off the sidewalks, the roads, stuff like that. Just make it a little easier to get to class.

Schuler: Accuweather says the city is expected to get hit by more snow to begin next week. Noah Schuler, NCC News.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC NEWS) — The white coat of snow that covered Syracuse resembles a winter wonderland, but not for everyone. Off-campus students at Syracuse University say the area’s heavy weather comes with safety concerns.

“I’ve had a few days earlier this week in which I was either slipping or just had to walk very slowly to get to class in one piece,” said Javier Berczely, a senior at Syracuse University who lives off-campus.

Despite Syracuse’s storied winters, the university has canceled classes due to snow just five times in its 155-year history. The lack of closures leaves off-campus students feeling stranded and unsafe.

“There’s way too many mornings in which the sidewalks are not shoveled and that’s kind of dangerous for students who are trying to get to class on time,” Berczely said.

Fellow off-campus student James Porter-Delgardo voiced similar frustrations.

“It would go a long way if Syracuse was able to do something to just clear off the sidewalks, the roads. Just make it easier to get to class,” Porter-Delgardo said.

According to AccuWeather, the city can expect more snow on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.
