Kerim Yazici: Central New York is getting ready to celebrate Halloween this weekend. NCC’s Caitlin McDonough is at Syracuse Ambulance bays to report on how first responders are preparing.
Caitlin McDonough: For paramedics, Halloween is a time to stay alert. Syracuse Ambulance EMT Vince Westfall says the night gets very busy.
Vince Westfall: On Halloweekend, we’re looking at sometimes 10 to 20 calls in one night. And so being able to deal with that surge and you know patient care that needs to be provided on the campus is you know definitely difficult. We man two ambulances at night.
McDonough: Syracuse University resident advisor Brooke Killgore says working the holiday can be isolating.
Brooke Killgore: We don’t do buddy systems during Halloweekend, which is kind of sad because that’s the one weekend where I would love somebody to come on rounds with me and like really support me in that moment. You don’t know how people act when they’re intoxicated.
McDonough: The spike in activity means the last day of October is anything but a normal shift. Caitlin McDonough, NCC News
