Trinity Corbett, Reporter: Most people are drawn to the polls because they want to see change in their community, but some people in the village of Solvay are happy with the way things are.

Kathy Marinelli-Brouse, Third Ward Trustee Candidate: I would like more programs for the youth, more programs for senior citizens. I’d love to see this village go back a little ways, but we need to go forward.

Corbett: Other voters, like Jahnice Brown, say there’s still a lot of work that needs to be done.

Jahnice Cobb: There’s many things that I think that this election–if the right candidate gets in, there will be some positive changes.

Corbett: Several voters spoke about changes to community programming and road construction on Milton Ave. Today will determine whether those voters see those changes in the future. In Solvay. Trinity Corbett, NCC News.

Syracuse, N.Y. (NCC News) — Residents and some candidates in the village of Solvay exercised their right to vote today and shared some of the things that they were pleased with and some of the things they hoped to see changed.

Robert Adams, a voter, expressed his approval of Incumbent Mayor Derek Baichi and the work he has been doing since he was elected.

“I believe the changes that are being made now are pretty good,” Adams said. “They’re remodeling a lot of the buildings on Milton Avenue. Mayor Derek Baichi–I think he’s doing a good job. He’s got a lot of plans to change things.”

Current mayor, Derek Baichi, said three things are priorities for him if reelected.

“The biggest thing we’re going to tackle—if reelected—we’re going to make sure we keep our community safe,” Baichi said, “we’re going to make sure we have more affordable housing and we’re going to make sure Milton Avenue gets completed this spring.”

Other voters like Jahnice Cobb shared that she’d also like to see changes in the roads around her community, but she also mentioned what else she’d like to see from her local government.

“I would like to see more focus in the community,” Cobb said. “Number one, our youth, we do in this area have a youth center. I would like to see more activities for them.”

Cobb says that there are a lot of other changes that need to be made, but with the right candidate in office, she believes these adjustments are attainable.
