SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — Halloween is an exciting time for college students. Dressing up in costumes, eating candy and partying with friends are fun activities, but only when they are safe.
Halloween weekend is one of the most dangerous times of the year, and Syracuse University’s Department of Public Safety and Dean of Students Sheriah N. Dixon are prioritizing safety this spooky season.
While both DPS and Dixon declined to be interviewed, Dixon’s office sent out an email Tuesday titled “Celebrate Halloween at Syracuse Safely and Respectfully.” The email included tips on safety, dressing respectfully, being good neighbors and listed resources to contact in case of an emergency.
One of the biggest concerns during Halloween weekend on college campuses is underage drinking. Underage drinking creates unsafe scenarios, prompting SU to take preventative measures.
Madison Hansen, a residential advisor for first-year residence halls, said she is especially concerned this weekend for her residents.
“I think every weekend as a residential advisor we see unfortunate scenarios, but I think especially Halloweekend there is going to be an increased number of underage drinking and intoxication, especially in freshman dorms,” Hansen said.
Syracuse University is advising students by email to be aware of their surroundings and “if they see someone struggling, intervene with care.”
The university is offering a 24-hour helpline through the Barnes Center at The Arch and the Orange Safety app to ensure students get home safely.
Sophomore Katherine Duffy said having a safety plan is important this Halloween.
“Halloween is such an exciting holiday, and I love spending time with my friends, but I think it’s really important that people, even if they do get carried away, have a system in place of how everyone is going to get home,” Duffy said.
The Department of Public Safety and Dixon’s office wish all students a happy Halloween. The email sent to students concluded: “Let’s make this Halloween memorable for all the right reasons.”
