Maddy Osborne, reporter: Hundreds of runners circled Onondaga Lake Sunday morning for the New York State Marathon Weekend. Half-marathon runner and Syracuse University student Sloane Modlinger says what started as an early and scary morning didn’t stop her from finding the energy to conquer not only the miles ahead — but the days to follow.
Sloane Modlinger: “This week I know that whatever happens I can handle it.”
Maddy Osborne: Being a runner isn’t the only thing to beat The Sunday Scaries. Modlinger’s friend, Allie Yarlas, says cheering on loved one gave her enough adrenaline to tackle her week.
Allie Yarlas: “If you guys can wake up that early on a Sunday to run a half-marathon, then I can go to my 8 a.m. every Monday.”
Maddy Osborne: Many Central New Yorkers say the energy from the marathon gives everyone a boost to start their week, proving that sometimes all it takes is 13.1 miles to go the extra mile on a Monday.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — Hundreds of runners laced up their sneakers at Onondaga Lake Park this weekend for the New York State Marathon Weekend, an annual event that brings athletes from across Central New York to circle the lake and race with great scenery.
For many, Sunday mornings bring what’s known as the “Sunday Scaries”, the mix of anxiety and dread that sets in as the weekend ends and a new week begins. But these runners turned that feeling into fuel.
Syracuse University student Sloane Modlinger ran the half marathon despite a late start after her Uber was delayed. She began the race 30 minutes after the official start time but caught up to the pack just a few miles later, finishing with a time of a little over 1 hour and 46 minutes.
“I’m really proud of my time,” Modlinger said. “I’m motived to have a good week becuase I set my mind to a goal and I accomplisehd it.”
Her friend Allie Yarlas came out to cheer her on and says the motivation didn’t stop at the finish line.
“It was super uplifting seeing everyone there cheering everyone on. It honestly made me want to be very productive and start training to run next year,” Yarlas said.
The race, part of the Loop the Lake Run, featured a marathon, half marathon, and shorter races throughout the weekend of Oct. 18–19. Many Central New Yorkers say the energy from the crowd and runners gave everyone a boost to start the week strong, proving that sometimes, all it takes is 13.1 miles to go the extra mile on a Monday.
