SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications announced its 2025 Beth Mowins Women’s Excellence in Sports Media Award winners at the Annual Marty Glickman Leadership in Sports Awards. Beth Mowins is a play-by-play announcer and sports journalist for ESPN.
Olivia Stomski, the Newhouse sports media director, said that Beth Mowins embodies what it means to be a Newhouse graduate and thrive in a male-dominated industry.
“Beth Mowins stands for giving back and serving as a role model for other students and being well rounded,” Stomski said.
This award recognizes women in sports who are thriving at Newhouse and take advantage of and excel in all opportunities given to them. The Beth Mowins Award went to one senior and one junior. This year, Stomski and previous 2024 award winner senior Rhianna Abeel presented the award. Beth could not attend the award show this year because she was calling a game in Paris.
Stomski said that Abeel showed excellence through being the person anyone could go to and dedicating her time to the studio at the Newhouse School. She was a producer, similar to this year’s winner.
This year, senior Isabelle Kelly, an ACCN producer, and junior Jazaleen Salinas, ACCN social media director, were recognized for their kindness and courage. They have both been working at the Atlantic Coast Conference Network for years. There were many hours of hard work and dedication by these two women to have the best live shows to keep the Newhouse Sports Media program strong and prestigious.
Kelly is a lead producer for preview, halftime and post-game shows for the Atlantic Coast Conference, covering sports like soccer, field hockey and basketball. She built show rundowns and contributed significantly to underclassmen involvement. Salinas directed and collected a high volume of media, including interviews and photos, to drive viewer engagement on the @newhousesportssu Instagram.
